A group of the University of Ibadan sports captains has on Thursday, August 21, 2025, decried what they described as the continued neglect of their welfare by the Students’Union leadership of the University of Ibadan and concerned authorities.
Recall that the sports captains had earlier drawn the attention of the management of the University of Ibadan and other concerned stakeholders to their challenges on August 16, 2025.
In a recent letter addressed to the Students’ Union leadership and other relevant stakeholders, the sports captains expressed their displeasure towards what they described as lack of institutional response to the challenges affecting their sports experiences.
“This letter comes not in confrontation, but in deep concern and disappointment at the continued silence and non-responsiveness of our collective student leadership to the earlier open letter addressed to the University authorities regarding the welfare and development of sports in our institution,” the letter reads.
“Leadership is about advocacy and unity, about defending the welfare of the very students you were elected to represent,” it added.
The captains urged the Students’ Representative Council, Faculty Presidents, Hall Chairpersons, Sports Directors, and other concerned stakeholders to solidarise with them in the face of their current challenges.
“History will judge our student leadership by how it responded when the welfare of its members was at stake. We do not ask for charity, we ask for solidarity, advocacy and action,” UI sports captains wrote.
