The Mathsters Alliance (T.M.A), in partnership with the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Directorate of Academic Coordination under the Office of the Vice President, Glory Salawu, is set to hold the maiden edition of its calculus tournament.

The competition is scheduled to hold in three phases: the qualifying round on May 2, 2026, the semi-finals on May 30, and the grand finale on June 13, 2026.

Interested participants are required to register via the official website. Upon submission, applicants will be redirected to join a WhatsApp community for updates on the competition.

Members of the Board of Technical Vetting and Academic Oversight include the Head of Department of Mathematics, Dr. M. E. Egwe; Dr. A. O. Akeju; and Engr. Ekoja, who also serves as advisors to the competition.

Speaking with IndyPress, the founder of the initiative, Ugwuoke Arinze Anthony, noted that the competition will focus strictly on calculus.

“There are different levels with their specific areas of interest. For now, it’s just 100L and 200L. In the next edition, we intend to add 300L to the list,” he said.

On the scope of the curriculum, he added:

“We have a manual that contains the details of the curriculum of the contest, but for now, we haven’t resolved to make it public for security reasons.”

“For the first edition, it’ll be limited to the contents of their courses — MAT 102 and MAT 201 for 100 and 200 level respectively with a little bit of advancement along the way.”

Speaking on the motivation behind the tournament, Anthony noted that the initiative was inspired by international academic competitions such as the MIT Integration Bee and its purpose is to serve interested students.

“We do not have many activities that stimulate scholars like we do for footballers or orators. You have tons of football tournaments for those who are good at sports, and you have Jaw War for people who are passionate about public speaking.”

“We want something similar, but for Math enthusiasts something fun that can give students that good old secondary school competition vibe, ” Anthony said.

He added that the long-term goal is to expand beyond the University’s curriculum.

“This won’t only be restricted to the scope of the UI curriculum. We have our own curriculum for the contest, which is also meant to meet international standards.” He added.
