The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have directed their members to suspend the ongoing nationwide strike from Monday, May 11, 2026, following renewed engagements with the Federal Government.

The directive was contained in a joint statement issued on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, and signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed H. Ibrahim. The statement was addressed to branch chairpersons across universities and inter-university centres.

“Following the strike action which commenced on Friday, 1st May, 2026, JAC of NASU and SSANU has been involved in series of meetings with Government officials on the demands of our members vis-à-vis conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement.”

According to JAC, a crucial meeting was held on Tuesday with the Federal Government’s Expanded Renegotiation Committee, chaired by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.

During the meeting, the committee indicated that further review of the government’s earlier offer would require the approval of the President and Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Following deliberations with the JAC leadership said it considered appeals for the suspension of the strike and secured a commitment from the government that all renegotiation processes, including a revised offer on the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS), would be concluded within two weeks from the date of suspension.

Branch leaders have therefore been directed to convene congresses to brief members and facilitate compliance with the directive, while engagements with relevant stakeholders continue.
