The University of Ibadan Students’ Union has convened an emergency congress and resolved to suspend academic activities amid the ongoing strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.
The congress, held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, near the university roundabout beside Queen Elizabeth II Hall, followed a peaceful student demonstration that began around 8 AM.
The protest saw students boycott lectures across several faculties, stage a major demonstration at the Tekena Tamuno Building (Administrative Block), and block the main university road.
Speaking at the congress, a student resident of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, Sotomi Daniel, called for a total halt to academic activities until the strike is resolved.
“Until they resolve the SSANU and NASU struggle, there will be no academic activities,” he said.
Other students raised concerns over worsening living conditions on campus, including the rising cost of kerosene and its impact on daily survival.
A student also criticised the state of healthcare services on campus.
“We need the Jaja Clinic to function properly,” she said.
Also speaking, Goodluck Akinlawon, a 500-level Law student from Obafemi Awolowo (Awo) Hall, insisted that lectures should not resume without concrete commitments from the university management.
“We are not going back to class until the university management provides a concrete solution and a commitment we can hold them to,” she said.
“The school cannot be treated as second-class.”
Responding to the concerns, the Students’ Union President, Temidayo Deboye, assured students that the resolutions reached would be presented to the university management.
“There will be no further classes until a solution is reached,” he said.
Below are the resolutions reached at the congress
Academic activities are to remain suspended until the strike is called off.
Electricity supply issues must be addressed, including a permanent fix to faults in Ring 2 and Ring 5.
The issue of cooking gas usage will be addressed within the week, with updates to be communicated to students.
University health services are to resume operations immediately.
A congress committee will be constituted to follow up on the issues raised.
As of the time of filing this report, the Union leadership and selected student representatives were in a meeting with the university management to deliberate on the concerns and proposed solutions.
