The African Studies Students’ Association (ASSA), Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, is set to hold the Sankofa Conference, a cultural experience for scholars, thinkers, creatives, and change-makers.

The conference, themed “Collective Memory: Bodies and African Futures,” is scheduled to hold from May 25 to May 26, 2026, at the Lady Bank Anthony Hall, Institute of African Studies, UI.

Speaking with IndyPress, the President of ASSA, Mr. Alimi Quadril Ifayomi, described the conference as an avenue for scholars from different fields to engage with Africa’s past and future.

“This year, the Sankofa Conference organised by the African Studies Students’ Association is a great opportunity for scholars from different fields to engage in how memories of Africans’ past can help to build a greater future. History is not just a pastime but a tracking record to create a better future for ourselves,” he said.

He added that the conference would interrogate questions surrounding Africa’s historical trajectory and present realities.

“The question is: do we care to look back? Is this the great African continent we’ve had in the past? These are the conversations that will be unfolded next week,” he added.
