An Indy Press journalist and 300–level law student, Abdul Habeeb Akorede, has emerged as first runner–up in the maiden edition of the Sunday Oguntola Essay Competition. The final result of the competition, which was announced at the Induction Ceremony of the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJUI), on Saturday, 18th September, 2021, saw Akorede come second position after Ebube Ezeadum, who came first, and just before Eze Obinna, the second runner-up. 

The competition, which was in honour of Mr. Sunday Oguntola, UCJ UI’s Editorial Adviser, and Editor at the Nation Newspaper, was opened to only campus journalists. Entrants were tasked to write on the topic, “Post Covid-19 and the Nigerian Student.” A total of fifteen entries were received, and five were shortlisted. 

The first prize winner went home with N30,000, and both the first runner–up and second runner–up received N20,000 and N10,000, respectively; while the other two of the five entrants received certificates of participation.

During the announcement of the winners of the competition at the induction, the new campus journalists were told to expect similar competitions in the future.
