The University of Ibadan Anti-cultism Campaign Committee, on the 14th March, 2024, visited St. Gabriel’s School (Junior & Senior) in Sabo, Ibadan and Oba Akinyele Memorial Grammar School in Basorun, Ibadan, to sensitize secondary school students about the dangers of cultism.

Present at the sensitization were the Chairperson of the Committee, Professor Helen Labeodan; President of the UI’SU, Oluwatobiloba Samuel; the Chief Security Officer of UI, Mr. Akinjide Ajagba; a representative of the Chief Imam of the University, Dr. Lere Ibrahim; and a representative of the Chaplain of the Chapel of Resurrection, Rev. Iyanu Daniel.

Professor Helen emphasized the relevance of UI combining efforts with the Oyo State Government to reform society through the provision of adequate information for enlightenment purposes.

She noted that the UI Centre for Social Orientation is committed to guiding secondary school students away from every anti-social behavior that could make them vulnerable.

On addressing the students, she encouraged them to be focused, law-abiding, and to embrace peace in order to learn and live in a conducive environment.

Mr. Oluwatobiloba Samuel emphasized that cultism seeks to jeopardize the hopes of its victims. He advised the students to prepare to compete with others as they target academic excellence and urged them to use their time judiciously.

Mr. Akinjide Ajagbe cautioned the students against anti-social vices and urged them to seek appropriate authorities rather than the support of the so-called ‘big brothers’ for necessary interventions when the need arises.

Dr. Lere Ibrahim reminded the students not to disappoint their parents’ aspirations and strive to be valuable members of the society and to contribute to Nigeria’s development.

Rev. Iyanu Daniel, counseled the students to put their hopes in the Lord and follow their passions rather than joining gangs that would lead them astray.
