The Students’ Representative Council, University of Ibadan has, on the 10th of May, 2024, reconstituted the External Union Affairs Committee.
The 11th Assembly, led by Rt. Honorable Matthias Busoye ratified the reconstitution of the committee during its first emergency sitting, as proposed by Honorable Peace Babatimehin.
Appointed to the committee are Hon. Peace Babatimehin, representing Sultan Bello Hall, and equally the chairman of the committee; Hon. Samuel Oladele, as the secretary; Hon. Hussein Abdullateef; Christopher Onuh, who is the Assistant General Secretary of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union.
In an interview with IndyPress, Hon. Babatimehin Peace, who was the chairman of the committee during the currency of the 10th Assembly, explained that the Committee will take a broader approach to evaluating what the position of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union would be.
The External Union Affairs Committee has been constituted to assess the strained relationship between the University of Ibadan Students’ Union and external students’ bodies like the National Association of Nigerian Students’ (NANS), as well as the National Association of University Students (NAUS).
According to Honorable Babatimehin Peace, the University of Ibadan Students’ Union has had two options to either “dissociate entirely from the associations in protest and begin to front the cause for major issues with after-sought solidarity with like-minded institutions” or “to remain in the association and become an opposition to the decadence and menace marauding the association.”
He added that the committee will seek to engage in wide consultations in order to arrive at the best means, to express the Union’s displeasure with these associations.
“We’d reach out to other institutions in our consultation and even with stakeholders within the association” Honorable Babatimehin Peace noted.
