The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities have directed their members to commence a nationwide strike action from May 1, 2026, following the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.
This was disclosed in a joint statement signed by the NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi and the SSANU, President, Com. Mohammed H. Ibrahim addressing branch chairpersons across universities and inter-university centres on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
According to the unions, a meeting was held on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, with the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside other stakeholders, to discuss the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements for non-teaching staff unions.
“The discussion at the meeting centred on the slow pace of renegotiation of the 2009 agreements for the non-teaching staff unions and our demand for its conclusion not later than April 30, 2026,” the statement read.
The unions also reiterated their rejection of the proposed 30% CONTISS/CONTUA allowance reportedly in circulation.
“In view of this, we hereby direct our members to commence total and comprehensive strike action in all federal and state universities, as well as inter-university centres, from 12:00 a.m. on May 1, 2026.”
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) further warned against non-compliance, noting that a national monitoring team has been constituted to ensure adherence.

“Any branch of NASU and SSANU found culpable of granting concessions or breaching the strike will be severely sanctioned,” the statement added.
Recall that similar to ongoing disputes involving the Implementation of ASUU renegotiation agreements, the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU had earlier issued a final ultimatum from April 1 to April 30, 2026, demanding the conclusion of the renegotiation process.
