For over 24 hours, residents under the Ring 5 electricity distribution unit covering Independence Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, Obafemi Awolowo Hall, and Bello Hall of Residence, University of Ibadan have been left without power.
According to a broadcast released by the Students’ Union Intelligence Team on Monday, May 4, 2026, the outage was triggered by an electrical fault.
The notice, issued by the team headed by the Union’s House Secretary, Tifase Oluwatimilehin, explained that the fault occurred shortly after power was restored around midnight.
“Most hostels in Ring 5 experienced an electrical fault when power was restored earlier this midnight. Efforts were made to fix it, but the SSANU/NASU strike affected manpower availability at maintenance, and repair work could not be carried out,” the notice read.

The Students’ Union Intelligence Team, however, assured affected residents that efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue.
“Ring 5 electrical issues could not be resolved today due to the SSANU/NASU strike. The maintenance units were unavailable for the repair work. We are currently working to ensure the issue is fixed as soon as IBEDC restores power,” it added
Recall that this development has become a growing pattern of electricity disruptions in the Ring 5 axis.
Since the beginning of the semester, multiple blackout incidents have been recorded, largely linked to recurring faults in the Ring 5 transformer, with no permanent solution in place.
