The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale has on Friday, 3rd of May, 2024 offered a note of gratitude to Professor Emeritus Ayo Banjo, who he described as ‘a distinguished scholar, outstanding administrator, mentor, author, and sportsman’.
The Vice-Chancellor made this remark at the birthday concert organized by The Ibadan Philharmonic Society in conjunction with the University of Ibadan to celebrate Professor Ayo Banjo at 90.
“Professor Emeritus Banjo had served as a living repository of cultural memories, passing down traditions, values, and events that shape collective identities. Professor Banjo is a gift to humanity and, more importantly, to the University of Ibadan, where he is remembered as the longest serving Vice-Chancellor” the Vice Chancellor noted.
The VC, who was represented by the Dean of Arts, Professor S. O. Oyetade at the concert, recalled that the tenure of Professor Banjo witnessed one of the worst internal crises in the history of the University, but Professor Banjo resolved the crisis with courage and wisdom to the satisfaction of all parties.
The Ibadan Philharmonic Society, a group of eminent persons who seek to revive the culture of classical music performed the works of Godwin Adedayo Dedeke and other works from notable Nigerian composers at the event.
Representing the birthday celebrant at the concert was his son, Mr. Tunde Banjo, who made special requests of songs for the celebrant.
