The Council of Faculty Presidents, University of Ibadan, on Thursday, April 3, 2025, proposed an increment of two thousand naira in faculty basic dues, IndyPress reports.

The Council wrote to the SRC for consideration. The Council is requesting for an opportunity to discuss and prove its reasons.

In a memorandum addressed to the Students’ Representative Council, University of Ibadan, the Council clarified that the proposal was made after “careful deliberation.”

Co-signed by the Council’s Chairman, Abiola Samuel, and Secretary, Oyebanji Israel, the Council claimed that the current ₦3,000 basic due is insufficient to cover expenditures, including Freshers’ Week, dinner, faculty weeks, elections, and other activities.

The Council highlighted the rising cost of organizing events and the struggle to provide quality services and programs to members as reasons for the proposed increment.

While acknowledging that the increase may cause inconvenience for students, the Council assured that the basic dues, if increased, would be “utilized” and “accounted for.”

“The current due of ₦3,000 is not sufficient to cater to the vision and activities of our various associations. With the increasing cost of organizing events, our associations are struggling to provide quality services and programs for members. Specifically, ₦3,000 is not enough to organize constitutional and customary events such as Freshers’ Week, dinner, faculty week, elections, the Dean’s Cup, and seasonal packages,” the Council wrote.

The Council’s proposal to increase faculty basic dues from ₦3,000 to ₦5,000 comes at a time when students are already struggling with other education-related costs, such as school fees and accommodation levies.
