The Public Relations Officer of the Great Independence Hall of Residence, Hammed Sodiq Akinkunmi (Sperrow), has disclosed his stance and defense regarding publicity discrepancy allegations leveled against him by the findings of the Indy Hall 15th Assembly Publicity Committee.
Hammed Sodiq made his stance known during the fourth plenary sitting of the Indy Hall 15th Assembly, held on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Recall that the PRO was earlier accused of poor performance and lack of proactiveness in line with his office responsibilities during the fourth plenary meeting.
He was also instructed to refund ₦25,000 calculated at ₦5,000 per month for five months from July to November 2026 from the ₦120,000 approved data allowance to the Hall’s account as a value-for-money measure within five working days. Furthermore, he was directed to sign an undertaking within 24 hours, committing to properly discharge the responsibilities of his office.
Giving his defense report, Sperrow stated he has been diligently carrying out his constitutional duties.
“I can confirm that I have been diligently carrying out my constitutional duties, which is to project the image of the hall,” he stated.
Addressing the issue of not spotlighting Katanga or creating podcasts, he explained that it is not his direct constitutional duty.
“To say that I didn’t spotlight Katanga is not my direct constitutional duty although it was observed by the previous administration” he stated.
“We all have the ways we do our things; so far, I’m not going outside my constitutional duty. I don’t see any reason to impose a duty I’m not willing to take on,” he said.
“In my manifesto, I stated that I’ll have a Katanga spotlight, but then it is at my discretion to decide when I’ll have it,” he added.
Regarding the issue of weekly engagement with Indy Radio, he explained that there was a major setback due to a fault developed by the public address system and the unavailability of a wireless microphone. He also explained that he personally took steps to reach out to his predecessor to locate the repairer of the public address system, but it didn’t yield a better result.
“I personally reached out to my predecessor in order to know the engineer who helps in repairing the public address system, and he gave me a contact. But as a student, I reached out to the person, but he kept on postponing by saying he is quite busy, and I also understand what it means for the man, as a student, to combine both academics with business,” he stated.
He further explained that he was unable to accomplish a lot of programs due to inconsistency in the power supply.
“We have not been able to execute a lot of programs due to the fact that there is no power,” he stated.
“If you can remember, last session we had an active generator. For the previous P.R.O., he was always certain of the success of every organized program, but it is not the same for this current administration because the generator is no longer active. In my manifesto, I have two programs which I scheduled to be organized on radio: one is the meeting with an entrepreneur in the hall, and the other is a meeting with a hall alumnus or elder in order for them to share their personal experiences. However, I was unable to hold these programs due to inconsistency in the power supply,” Hammed said.
Also speaking on the issue of not creating content, Hon. Hameed explained that he tried his best to do so, but he couldn’t conclude it due to the unavailability of materials. He also stated that it is not constitutionally bound that he should create content.
“Concerning the issue of content creation, as much as I am here to project the image of the hall, there are different ways to do so, and content creation is just one of them. Being one of them doesn’t mean it is constitutionally bound that I must create content,” he stated.
“Although I tried my best to create content, it was not successful due to the unavailability of devices,” he added.
