UI Senate Approves Establishment of Nigeria’s First Faculty of Physiotherapy

The Senate of the University of Ibadan has approved the transformation of the Department of Physiotherapy into a full-fledged Faculty of Physiotherapy, making it the first ever in the history of Nigeria.

This development was disclosed in a statement by the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, on their official website.

“The University of Ibadan has once again etched its name in the history of health professions education in Nigeria with the approval of the Department of Physiotherapy to become a full-fledged Faculty of Physiotherapy within the College of Medicine,” the statement reads.

According to the release, the establishment of the faculty was approved during the Senate meeting held on Monday, August 31, 2026.

The new Faculty will comprise five departments: the Department of Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, Department of Musculoskeletal/Orthopaedic Physiotherapy, Department of Neurological Physiotherapy, Department of Sports and Recreational Physiotherapy, and Department of Occupational Therapy.

The newly approved faculty is expected to deepen the University’s contribution to healthcare delivery, human-resource development, research, and innovation, while strengthening collaboration across disciplines and institutions.
