The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, has declared the array of shop cubicles situated in front of Block D of the Great Independence Hall of Residence illegal.
Adebowale made this known while addressing the alumni of the Hall during a discussion on the ongoing renovation at Block D on Saturday, August 5, 2026, at the Junior Common Room of the Hall.
According to him, the Hall should not have permitted the structures in the first place, as any structure not contained in the university’s master plan is considered illegal.
“The hall shouldn’t have allowed it in the first place. It’s not in the master plan, anything that is not in the master plan is illegal,” he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor further explained that the university has designated areas where structures can be established, adding that anybody seeking to erect structures on university land are required to apply for approval.
“If you want to put up structures and so on, there are designated places where you put structures. You apply, and the land will be given to you free of charge under the agreement of the university. The land belongs to the federal government,” he added.
The VC maintained that the legality of structures within the university are determined, among other considerations, by their inclusion in the institution’s approved master plan and compliance with the university’s procedures for allocating land and approving structures.
