The Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society has advanced to the finals of the JAW WAR 2026 after emerging victorious over the Faculty of Education following a re-assessment of the semi-final round.

This was disclosed in a resolution co-signed by the President, TLDS’UI, Goodness Akinloye and the General Secretary, TLDS’UI, Temitope Ashimiyu, on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

Recall that the Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society wrote a petition requesting the Literary and Debating Society, University of Ibadan (TLDS’UI), to re-assess the impromptu round that led to the Faculty of Education winning the round.

According to the statement, the substantive debate initially ended in a tie, resulting in an impromptu debate in accordance with the competition’s procedure.

Following the competition, the Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society requested a review of the scores. 

“The outlier was removed in line with standard scoring procedure; however, the impromptu round itself resulted in another tie,” the statement said.

TLDS’UI explained that the development presented an unprecedented situation in the history of the competition. Ordinarily, a second tie following the removal of the outlier score sheet would have resulted in another tie-breaker round through a fresh impromptu debate.

However, the society noted that because the outlier score sheet was not identified before one of the constituencies was pronounced the winner, conducting another impromptu debate at that stage could cause further procedural irregularity and hardship.

“Consequently, after extensive deliberations and in the interest of fairness, both constituencies and TLDS’UI agreed to adopt an alternative method of resolving the issue peculiar to this circumstance,” the statement read.

 

Both the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Education selected a new panel of five judges for the reassessment. In accordance with the agreement reached, three of the five selected judges conducted the reassessment.

At the end of the exercise, the Faculty of Education Literary and Debating Society recorded 82.4 per cent, while the Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society scored 84.6 per cent.

Based on the reassessment, TLDS’UI declared the Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society the winner of the JAW WAR 2026 semi-final between Education and Law.

“Based on the outcome of the review, the Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society is hereby declared the winner of the JAW WAR 2026 Semi-final round between Education and Law,” the statement read.

The Faculty of Law will consequently proceed to the JAW WAR 2026 final, scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
