In a bid to make all members of the students’ community thoroughly informed about the demands and to understand the prospect of the ongoing strike action, ASUU, University of Ibadan Chapter held an interactive session today, Friday, 18th March, 2022 at the SRC Chamber, Students Union Building to sensitise students on the core demands of the Staff Union.

Addressed by ASUU UI Chairperson, Professor Ayoola Akinwole explained that the purpose of the nation-wide strike action has been to compel the Federal Government of Nigeria to sign and commence implementation of the renegotiated 2009-Memorandum of Understanding agreement.

He explained that the national leadership of the Academic Staff Union resolved on strike after a series of failed attempts to get the Federal Government to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed between the union and the government.

Speaking further, Professor Ayoola Akinwole explained that ”the government’s poor commitment to the payment of academic earned allowance (EAA); the continued use of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System and refusal to adopt the Universities Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), and also the proliferation of the universities in the country have culminated in the extension of the strike action.”

Students at the interactive session were advised to feel concerned about the derailing state of public universities.

Barrister Rashedat, from the Campaign for Workers and Youth Alternative also in attendance at the interactive gathering entreated students as stakeholders to defend their interest, seeing to a better state of public universities.
