Mass Defeat: Only One of Eight Candidates Elected in History Department

By IndyPress News Desk

Only Joy Iyanoluwa Olusoga, who contested for the office of General Secretary and polled 29 votes, was elected in the Students Historical Society of Nigeria (SHSN UI) elections.

This was disclosed in a result circulated by the Students Historical Society of Nigeria Independent Electoral Commission (SHSNIEC) on Friday, October 16, 2026.

Other unopposed aspirants, including the presidential candidate, failed to meet the constitutional requirements for election.

According to the Commission, 91 voters were accredited for the election, but only 56 votes were cast, while 35 accredited voters did not vote.

Explaining the outcome, the Commission stated that the SHSN Constitution requires unopposed aspirants to secure two thirds of the electorate to be declared elected.

“As provided in Subsection 2(2)(iii) of the SHSN Constitution, an unopposed aspirant must secure 2/3 of the electorate (61 Votes of 91) to be elected,” SHSNIEC stated.
