The Tax Club, University of Ibadan, held its sessional event, Tax Watch, at the International Conference Center, ICC, on Saturday, the 2nd of March, 2024.
Tagged Tax Watch 6.0, with the theme, Leveraging Data Analytics for Sustainable Tax Planning, the event was graced by an array of prominent guests, amongst whom were Prof. Muritala Awodun, a member of the Presidential Committee for Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Barr. Samuel O. Agbeluyi, President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria and Chief Akinyele Oladeji. The event also featured a number of panelists from within the tax sector, and had over 200 students from the University of Ibadan in attendance.
Giving his keynote address, Prof. Muritala Awodun spoke on the theme of the day, Leveraging Data Analytics for Sustainable Tax Planning. According to him, “taxation is the physical weapon in the hands of the government that is used to shape and direct the behavior of people in the society.”
“It is also used to direct the growth in the country”, he added. He equally went on to explain that in order to sustainably leverage on data analytics, certain things such as relevant tax laws and tax professionals, amongst other things.
The event, alongside other side events, featured two separate panelist sessions as well as an inter-university policy debate competition, Tax Hack, which was won by the University of Lagos.
