A member of the Students’ Union Electoral Commission, Uthman Bolarinwa, during a chat session with Indypress, has explained that the physical polling booth centre, stationed at Conference Room, Students Affairs Division, UI, has had a high turn out of students who visited the centre, but mainly unaccredited.
Indypress, as of 11:09am, during the visitation to the centre observed that the physical polling booth was devoid of student presence, but only of two members of the electoral commission.
“Most of the people that have been coming are unaccredited voters, and we’ve been telling them that if they didn’t do accreditation they wouldn’t be allowed. And the others, their information is at Abdulsalam, so they have to go there. I believe the turn out will be very high but maybe later,” Uthman noted.
Also in a release, titled ‘Disclaimer’ by the Students’ Union Electoral Commission, on Saturday, 20th April, 2024, the Commission has explained that only accredited students, who might be facing technical glitch in one way or another were being attended to.
“It has gotten to the attention of the commission concerning the rumour been spread around that unaccredited students can exercise their franchise at the physical polling unit. This is to clearly state that it is untrue and only accredited students who might be facing technical glitch in one way or another has the access to walk to any of the physical polling units and cast their vote,” the release reads.
“The Electoral Commission remains committed to providing free and fair election and only information that directly comes from the commission remains authentic,” the release concluded.
