The leadership of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union on Thursday, March 20, 2025, announced that the Centre for General Studies (CGS) has agreed to make the sale of General Studies textbooks entirely optional.

The announcement was signed by the Public Relations Officer, Adekanmbi Ezekiel.

It followed a meeting between the Union executives and CGS officials, where concerns were raised about past instances of students being compelled to buy textbooks. Students have sometimes been delayed during exams for not presenting evidence of purchase.

After a thorough discussion, both parties reached an agreement ensuring that students will no longer be mandated to purchase course materials, eliminating a financial burden that has long been a source of complaints.

Additionally, the Union leadership visited the UI Career Development and Counseling Center, where they raised concerns about the growing mental health challenges among students and explored potential collaborations to provide meaningful support.

The Union assured students that steps would be taken to improve access to mental health resources on campus.

“We will continue to engage key offices, present students’ concerns, and push for lasting solutions,” the Union stated, reaffirming its commitment to student welfare.
