“Drug Abuse Will Affect Your Academic Performance”- NDLEA Commander Tells UI Student Leaders

‎‎The Career Development and Counseling Centre, University of Ibadan, organized a workshop for student leaders in the university.

‎The event, themed “Empowering Student Leaders for Effective Governance, Mental Health Awareness, Drug Abuse and Prevention and Sustainable Impact”, took place on Monday, 10th of November, 2025 at the First Bank Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Agriculture.

The workshop addressed the roles of students leaders in creating awareness against against drug abuse.

Represented by Dr. Alero Adegbolagun, ‎Prof. Jubril Abdulmalik, a psychiatrist at University Health Service, emphasized the effects of mental illness on the behavior of individuals.

He said, ” Mental illness affects how we feel and how we behave, and how we function in family relationships.”

‎”Some of the ways you can know if anybody is suffering from mental illness include not taking a bath, talking to themselves, being overwhelmed with anxiety and so on,” he added.

He further charged them to prioritize taking care of their mental health, while advising them to stay conscious of mental disorders among students.

‎Speaking also at the event, Superintendent A.O Olufeso, representing the Oyo state NDLEA Commandant, Commander Joe Fadile Olayinka, addressed the topic “Drug Abuse Danger and Prevention :The role of Student Leadership in Promoting Healthy Lifestyle.”

The commander urged the student leaders to be an agent of change in the society.

‎He also stressed the danger of drug abuse on students, warning students to do away with it against addiction.

“Drug abuse will affect your academic performance. When you are addicted to drug abuse, you won’t be able to secure your future potential,” he advised.

The event also had the attendance of the University of Ibadan Dean of Students, Professor Ademola Lewis and student leaders across halls of Residence, departments, faculties and Students’ Union.
