The University of Ibadan Student Union has again reassured the students that processes for the usage of gas in all undergraduate hostels are currently ongoing.

This development was disclosed in an official memorandum co-signed by the Union President, Deboye Temidayo, and the General Secretary, Joshua Shontan, on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

“We understand that the initial two-week timeline has elapsed. We appreciate your patience as we have navigated the bureaucratic process required to finalize this policy,” the statement reads.

According to the Union, the weeks of silence were as a result of their ongoing negotiation with the management to ensure this project is implemented safely and sustainably.

It also added that an inspection of the undergraduate hostels took place on Saturday, May 23, 2026, while the gas approval process is in its final stage.

“On Saturday, May 23, the Union leadership conducted a comprehensive, final inspection of all undergraduate hostels. This exercise was vital to verify facility readiness and reconcile our findings with the report received from the Student Affairs Office.”

The memo also stressed that efforts are in place to ensure the University management releases an official binding memorandum for this new transition.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure the administration releases the final, binding memorandum immediately,” it stated.

Recall that on May 6, 2026, the University of Ibadan students protested over the poor living conditions on campus due to the JAC of SSANU and NASU strike.

Following the peaceful demonstration, the Student Union reached a resolution with the University Management on the integration of cooking gas in the halls of residence.
