Residents of the Ring 5 axis of the University of Ibadan are once again faced with electricity outages following fresh faults linked to the Ring 5 transformer.
The Ring 5 transformer, which serves some of the university’s largest halls of residence, including Independence Hall and Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, the two largest male halls of residence, Obafemi Awolowo Hall, the largest female hall of residence, as well as private hostels within the campus, has been plagued by persistent faults since the beginning of the semester.
As of Sunday, June 21, 2026, student residents in the affected halls continued to experience power outages while electricity remained available in other parts of the university.
The disruption comes amid the ongoing 2025/2026 First Semester examinations, further raising concerns about its impact on students’ academic activities and overall living conditions across the affected halls.
Speaking with IndyPress, Aina Isaac, a student resident of Indy Hall shared his concerns about the impact of the disruption.
He noted how the absence of electricity affects his daily productivity and access to information through his mobile phone.
“It has been really stressful with exams going on. I am just hoping the Ring 5 issue can be resolved as soon as possible. That alone would take a lot of pressure off students.”
Expressing similar concerns, Dorcas, a resident of Obafemi Awolowo Hall, noted that the outage affects not only examination preparation but also the availability of water within the hostel.
“If this light issue persists most of us in Awo won’t have water because the light is what powers our water. One thing affecting another.”
These are only a few of the concerns highlighted from the numerous conversations and complaints surrounding the issue.
Information gathered by IndyPress indicates that the latest outage is part of a series of electrical faults recorded within the week.
There have been reported incidents ranging from transformer faults to an explosion that occurred shortly after power was restored to the area.
It was observed on Tuesday that a transformer located near the Indy Hall laundry area developed faults shortly after electricity was restored, with residents reporting a loud explosion that resulted in another interruption of power supply.

Similarly, on Friday, concerns were raised after the Ring 5 transformer was observed to have developed another fault, further sparking reactions from students who had already experienced multiple power disruptions within the week.

Speaking with IndyPress, the Administration General of the Great Independence Hall of Residence, Obinelo Chisom Folorunsho, described the recurring electricity issues as a matter of serious concern.
“The recurring electricity issues being experienced in the Hall, including instances of transformer faults which lead to irregular power supply in Ring 5, which the hall belongs to, are matters of serious concern to the Hall administration,” he said.
According to him, efforts have been made to address the issue through engagements with the Students’ Union, represented by the House Secretary, Mr. Oluwatimilehin Mark Tifase, as well as with the University Management.
He explained that the discussions are aimed at identifying the root causes of the recurring faults and determining the most effective and sustainable approach to resolving the problem.
“These engagements are aimed at identifying the root causes of the problem and exploring possible interventions that will ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply to the hall,” he added.
In an interview with IndyPress, the Students’ Union House Secretary noted that maintenance units are usually contacted whenever electrical issues arise and that they respond promptly.
“The maintenance units are always contacted whenever there is an electrical issue, and they attend to it immediately,” he said.
He further revealed that the recent issue was linked to work around a newly constructed hostel, although further details had yet to be disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
“The issue with Ring 5 this last week is the newly built hostel which they are working on. Water Brooks, the hostel behind Awo.”
As of press time, efforts by IndyPress to obtain comments from the University’s Director of Works and Maintenance regarding steps being taken to provide a lasting solution were unsuccessful, as messages seeking clarification on the situation had not received a response.
Recall that earlier this semester, students raised concerns over prolonged faults affecting the Ring 5 transformer, with complaints dating back to previous academic sessions.
