University of Ibadan Students’ Union President, Adeboye Temidayo (DEBOYE), has unilaterally released a statement eulogizing the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, as his tenure comes to an end.

The statement comes a day after the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) called for an investigation into the outgoing Vice-Chancellor over alleged corruption and anti-student policies during his tenure.

In the statement released on Friday, July 24, 2026, Deboye wrote:

“On behalf of the entire student body of the University of Ibadan, the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, under the leadership of Adeboye Temidayo (DEBOYE), extends its heartfelt appreciation and warm congratulations to our esteemed Vice-Chancellor…”

He further stated:

“As a Students’ Union, we acknowledge your willingness to engage with students on matters affecting our welfare and academic experience. While every administration is accompanied by its own challenges, your openness to dialogue and your commitment to preserving the values and reputation of the University remain commendable.”

However, Deboye’s commendation stands in sharp contrast to several defining events that occurred under the outgoing administration.

Among them was the implementation of an approximately 300 percent increase in school fees, which triggered widespread student protests and contributed to a three-week disruption of academic activities.

Professor Kayode Adebowale’s administration also presided over the suspension of the UI3: Mide Gbadegesin, Ayodele Aduwo, and Linus Nice, student activists who opposed the fee hike.

His administration was further criticised over alleged interference in Students’ Union affairs, the arbitrary felling of trees on campus, the criminalization of dissent, and other actions that repeatedly drew opposition from students and sections of the university community.

Despite these developments, Deboye further stated:

“Your administration contributed significantly to strengthening the University’s pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, innovation and community service, while sustaining the legacy that has continued to make the University of Ibadan a reference point for higher education in Nigeria and beyond.”

Although the appreciation message was issued on a letterhead different from the official Students’ Union letterhead, Deboye repeatedly claimed to be speaking on behalf of the student body.

“On behalf of every Uite, we sincerely appreciate your dedication, your service, and your commitment to the continued progress of the University of Ibadan.”

His decision to speak “on behalf of every Uite” is questionable, given that he issued the statement unilaterally rather than through the Union’s official letterhead.

The issue reflects broader questions about accountability, the use of public office, and proper representation in student leadership.
