Claim
A claim suggests that on Saturday, AI will be available on WhatsApp and will have access to all chats. It advises all group admins to enable the “Advanced Chat Privacy” option. Otherwise, the AI can supposedly open group messages, see phone numbers, and even access personal data from your phone, including private chats.
Verdict
False. Although WhatsApp has enhanced privacy settings, this message is a misleading chain that has been circulating since the Advanced Chat Privacy was introduced .
Full Text
A viral text is currently circulating on WhatsApp, directed especially toward group admins. The text claims that starting this Saturday, AI will be available on WhatsApp and will have access to all chats.
According to the circulating text, all group admins should enable the “Advanced Chat Privacy” option; otherwise, AI will be able to open group messages, see phone numbers, and even gain access to personal data from the phone, including private chats.
The text further explains that to prevent AI interruptions through this privacy option, WhatsApp group admins must open the group chat, tap the chat name at the top, and scroll down to enable the Advanced Chat Privacy option.
This fact-check examines whether the claim is true or not.
Verification
Findings by IndyPress show that a similar message was spotlighted on Reddit 23 days ago, with the exact content aimed at spreading fear.
It has been observed that this exact (or very similar) warning has been circulating since mid-2025 and continues into 2026; it has been debunked as a chain message that misrepresents the feature’s purpose.
According to official WhatsApp documentation, when Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled for a chat, participants: cannot save media to their device gallery automatically, cannot ask Meta AI to answer questions or create images or summaries in that chat, and cannot export the chat.
Meta also explicitly stated in the same documentation that,
“All chats are private by default. Your personal messages are always protected with end-to-end encryption. Meta AI cannot access your chats. It can only read the messages people choose to send it, and nothing else. This is true whether Advanced Chat Privacy is on or off.”
Contrary to the claim, all regular messages on WhatsApp (including groups) remain end-to-end encrypted. Meta cannot read them. AI only sees what users explicitly send to it (e.g., by typing @Meta AI).
As of the filing of this report, there was no statement announcing the incorporation of a new AI feature into WhatsApp as described in the broadcast message.
WhatsApp’s most recent update on its official blog was on July 29, 2026, announcing the use of usernames instead of phone numbers as the newest WhatsApp feature for its users.
Conclusion
Enabling Advanced Chat Privacy is not harmful and can be a good privacy practice for sensitive groups (as it limits easy data export and AI interaction). However, it is not required to stop any supposed massive AI surveillance. This feature was introduced earlier in April 2025 to give users more control, not as a sudden emergency response to AI gaining full access.
Since there is no official evidence or notice that a new AI feature will be incorporated into WhatsApp this Saturday, the claims are false. Members of the public are advised to disregard unverified claims and circulatory notices across WhatsApp groups. Always verify privacy warnings against official sources, such as the WhatsApp Help Center, instead of forwarding such messages.
