UISU Election: Indy Hall Elders’ Council Removes Treasurer Over Support for Rival Candidate

By Gbayesola Samuel

The Elders’ Council of Great Independence Hall has removed its treasurer, Sulaimon Afees, from his position and other Indy groups amid disagreements over his support for a candidate not endorsed by the council ahead of the 2026 UISU election.

The decision was disclosed in an internal memo circulated by the Elders’ Council on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

Speaking with IndyPress, Afees said his removal followed his decision to support a candidate of his choice rather than the candidate endorsed by the council.

He said he had been involved in discussions among stakeholders on the candidates’ plans but withdrew after realising he would not support some of the aspirants.

“I was involved then, but immediately I knew I wouldn’t be supporting the presidential candidate, I left the group, made my stance known and disassociated myself from their group,” he said.

Afees added that disagreements had arisen behind the scenes over his position.

“When they saw that I wouldn’t be supporting their candidate but as usual it is an honour to be a sacrificial lamb”

“I understand that going against the hall will come with a lot of attacks. Hopefully, in future, students will see beyond affiliations and choose a candidate of their choice,” he added.

He also noted that he has received various insults and mockery attempts from members of the current Indy Executive Council.

However, the chairman of the Elders’ Council Badmus Sultan Akanbi told IndyPress that the decision was consensual, stating that Afis had requested to be excused from his duties after expressing his intention to support a candidate not endorsed by the council.

“He met with me and explained his interest in supporting a candidate not endorsed by the Elders’ Council and, having been an integral part of the council, he suggested he be excused of his duties to the said council. A meeting was subsequently held and a consensual decision was reached,” the chairman said.
