N50M Graft: Indy Hall Lawmakers Condemn Honorary Membership Conferred on Oyo Politician, Demand Emergency Sitting Over Constitutional Breach

By IndyPress News Desk

The Great Independence Hall Constituency has condemned the unilateral conferment of honorary membership on an Oyo State political aspirant, while demanding an emergency sitting of the University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council (SRC) to address a constitutional breach.

This was disclosed in a statement addressed to the Speaker of the University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council, signed by the Majority Leader of the Independence Hall Constituency, Hon. Ugochukwu Godswill, on Friday, July 31, 2026.

“The Great Independence Hall Constituency writes to register its firm and unequivocal objection to the unilateral and unconstitutional conferment of an Honorary Membership on an Oyo State political aspirant under the so-called ‘UISU Legislative Summit Series,'” the statement read.

According to the lawmakers, the action was taken in flagrant disregard of the Students’ Union Constitution and without the approval it expressly requires.

“We consider this not a mere procedural lapse, but a direct violation of the governing document of this Union.”

The lawmakers also faulted the use of the Students’ Union logo on branded materials bearing the politician’s image, arguing that it carries wider implications for the Union.

“Furthermore, the use of the official UISU logo on merchandise bearing the donor’s image is unacceptable and cannot be dismissed as an oversight. It creates the false and misleading impression that the Students’ Union has officially endorsed a political aspirant, when no such decision was ever taken by this Council or by the general membership.

“This is a reckless compromise of the Union’s political neutrality, and those responsible must be prepared to account for it.”

Substantiating their position, the lawmakers further argued that the conferment clearly violated the Constitution.

“Article III, Section 1(b) of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution is unambiguous: Honorary Membership may only be conferred upon the approval of at least two-thirds of the members of the SRC present and voting at a special meeting.

“There is no ambiguity here to hide behind, and no departure from this provision will be tolerated or explained away. We will not accept silence, delay, or evasive parliamentary manoeuvring on this matter.”

The constituency therefore demanded that the Speaker immediately convene an emergency sitting of the Council.

“We therefore demand, not merely request, that the Office of the Speaker invoke Article XXIV, Section 1 of the Constitution without delay and convene an emergency sitting of the Council to formally address this constitutional breach. This matter must be resolved with the urgency it deserves, and the Constituency expects full accountability from whoever authorized or facilitated this conferment.”

The statement added that the constituency would pursue all constitutional means available should the Council fail to act.

“The Great Independence Hall Constituency will not stand by while the Constitution is treated as optional and the neutrality of this Union is quietly eroded. We expect the Council to act decisively and without further delay, and we reserve the right to escalate this matter through all legitimate constitutional channels should this Council fail to respond appropriately.”

Recall that on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the Speaker of the University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council unilaterally conferred honorary membership on Hon. Odidiomo, an Oyo State senatorial aspirant, during a visit attended by a select group of individuals.
