Eight weeks into the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic session, the University of Ibadan Students’ Union electoral ban remains unbanned, with no official indication of when the 2026 electoral process will commence.
Article X of the Students’ Union Constitution provides that the Union election must be conducted no later than 30 days after the commencement of an academic session.
Despite this provision, the electoral ban has yet to be lifted, raising concerns over compliance with the Union’s constitutional timeline.
Recall that a similar situation was recorded in the previous session, when concerns were raised over delays in the commencement of the electoral cycle.
IndyPress has observed subtle campaigns by aspiring student leaders across the halls of residence, often presented under the guise of public awareness activities.
As of the time of filing this report, the Students’ Representative Council, the policymaking body of the Union, and the Students’ Union Executive Council have made no public statement on the electoral process.
Similarly, there has been no official communication from the Deputy Registrar, who serves as the Chairman of the Students’ Union Electoral Commission.
The continued silence mirrors the delay recorded in the previous electoral cycle, when the election remained suspended for weeks.
This raises questions about adherence to the Union’s electoral timeline, independence of the union and the extent of administrative involvement in the Union’s electoral process, particularly given the Deputy Registrar’s role as Chairman of the Electoral Commission.
