Tension briefly erupted at Great Independence Hall, University of Ibadan, late Saturday night, September 12, 2026, following a confrontation between some residents of Ransome Kuti Hall and student residents of Great Independence Hall, IndyPress reports.

According to eyewitness accounts, some residents of Ransome Kuti Hall visited Indy Hall after defeating the hall in the quarter-final of the JAW WAR tournament to celebrate their victory. 

However, the celebration reportedly took another turn after the lights at the fresher block were switched off and a crowd gathered at the hall’s gate.

Recall that last week, a similar altercation reportedly occurred following Ransome Kuti Hall’s victory over Azikiwe Hall in the JAW WAR tournament. 

According to the information gathered, some student residents of Kuti Hall were alleged to have engaged in mockery celebrations, leading to friction between the two halls.

IndyPress observed that the main gate of Great Independence Hall was closed to prevent Kutites from gaining access to the hall, while Indy Marshals were also present at the scene.

Recounting the incident, a Kutite at the scene told IndyPress that they had come to celebrate their victory.

“We won, you guys lost and we came to celebrate. That is how it is.”

Speaking with IndyPress, the Public Relations Officer of Great Independence Hall, Akinkumi Sodiq Hammed, said the hall maintains a cordial relationship with Ransome Kuti Hall and that the decision to restrict access was intended to prevent a possible escalation.

“It is quite evident that the Great Independence Hall shares a vibrant relationship with Ransome Kuti Hall, and we have consistently demonstrated this cordial friendship.

“Yesterday, following our JAW WAR defeat to our longstanding friends, Ransome Kuti Hall, they, as is customary, attempted to celebrate across campus, including entering the Great Independence Hall. However, to prevent any altercations that might arise in the heat of the moment, especially considering the recent issue between Ransome Kuti Hall and Azikiwe Hall, we preferred that they refrain from entering our hall to ensure no violence occurs that could harm anyone or our existing relationship.”

He added that the decision was communicated amicably to the Kuti Hall residents.

“Thanks to the stakeholders of Ransome Kuti Hall, they understood the situation. Some of the Katanga stakeholders even accompanied them back to their hall. This exemplifies a great level of brotherhood, understanding, and mutual respect between the two halls,” he added.
