My Country

By Morolani Oluwafemi

My Country
Flowing with milk and honey
Freed from the colonial shackles
Now bound in indigenous grip

United in diversity
Unity shattered
Bedrock of Democracy
Democracy overruled

On its way to be a pace-setter,
But lost its course along the path.
A country full of people & talent
Yet, void of accomplishment

Migration, the order of the day
Emigration, the portion assigned to us
Economy, rotten from decay
Atmosphere, full of recessional hardship

And yet again,
We celebrate another year of supposed Independence
Even though we’re still “in dependence.”
Of this, I’m confident, though—
Change is coming, and soon.

What I’m unsure of is,
What change will it be?
