The barricade gate between Independence Hall of Residence and Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall of Residence was shut as of 9:02 a.m. today, October 31, 2026.
The closed gate has made movement difficult for road users who intend to use the route for their journeys to different destinations on campus.
The unannounced closure of the gate is happening as the student community at the University of Ibadan is gearing up for the 2026 Students’ Union election, where several candidates from different halls and faculties are contesting for elective positions in the Students’ Union.
When contacted, the Administrator General of Indy Hall, Obinelo Chisom (Raphael), explained that the closure of the gate was necessitated by the need to forestall confrontation between the two halls.
“We closed the gate this morning to avoid confrontation. But now we’re opening the gate because we believe that we are peace-loving people and Zikites should also abide by this principle,” he said.
