Gbadebo David Adegbola, a 400-level student of the Department of Wildlife and Ecotourism Management, Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources, University of Ibadan, has been elected Speaker of the Great Independence Hall of Residence 14th Assembly.

Honorable Adegbola received four votes, whereas Honorable Balogun Ayotunde received two votes.

The newly elected Speaker outlined a seven-point agenda aimed at fostering continuity, effective communication, and improved welfare for hall residents.

The plans, which were presented during the inaugural sitting of the 14th Assembly, focused on collaboration, outreach, and proactive governance.

The Speaker’s first priority was continuity. He promised to ensure that ongoing projects and sponsorship initiatives from the previous administration are followed up and completed efficiently. This, he believes, will provide stability and accelerate progress within the hall.

In the area of communication, the new Speaker plans to facilitate regular and transparent updates on hall matters, ensuring that residents and the university community stay informed.

Focusing on welfare and well-being, he intends to advocate for better living conditions by engaging floor representatives to identify and address key concerns faced by residents.

His manifesto also highlighted networking and outreach, with a plan to create a database of Katangites holding political and academic positions across departments.

Additionally, the Speaker intends to foster relationships with other halls of residence, including students living off-campus. This will serve as an intelligence network, keeping the hall informed about relevant developments.

The Speaker aims to work closely with the SRC Majority Leader in the hall to prepare for emergencies that might arise from student union activities, ensuring swift and effective responses.

Honorable Abdulhakeem Abdurrahman Ayokunle received five votes despite being unopposed and emerged as the Deputy Speaker of the new assembly.

Honorable Matthew Ugochukwu, a second-year student of the Department of Quantity Surveying, was elected Clerk of the 14th Assembly with a total of six votes.

Honorable Sanusi Kareem, who struggled to respond to questions evaluating his understanding of the office of the Chief Whip, was eventually elected with four votes.

The elected principals were, however, sworn in afterward. The inaugural sitting ended by 9:51PM.
