On Saturday, the 8th of July, 2023, the 10th Assembly of the University of Ibadan Students Representative Council was formally inaugurated at the UI’SRC chambers.
The inaugural sitting for the 10th assembly which was initially overseen by the outgoing speaker, Hon Eniola, had the primary agenda of electing principal officers for the new assembly.
The office of the Speaker was contested for by Hon. Olamide Omotunde of the Alexander Brown Hall constituency and Hon. Gbenuola Oluwole of the Queen Elizabeth II Hall constituency.
Hon. Olamide emerged as speaker after a keenly contested election that saw him win with 57 votes to his opponent’s 55.
The new speaker then went on to oversee the election of the remaining principal officers. Hon. Inubile Moyinoluwa of the Great Independence Hall constituency was elected unopposed to the position of Deputy Speaker.
Hon. Odu Faith of Queen Idia Hall constituency was also elected unopposed to the position of clerk on the floor of the house.
Hon Arewa-Jesu Akinwusi of Obafemi Awolowo Hall constituency was elected as Chief Whip after nomination by the speaker and a vote of 2/3 of the Honourable members present as stipulated by the constitution.
The incoming speaker in a statement stated, “in the 10th assembly, we want to have a house that’s more recognizable and more respectable, one that can serve as a model for student legislatures.”
