On the 16th of September 2023, Recycledge held the first-ever University of Ibadan Pick-A-Thon. Volunteers, mainly students, gathered together at the University of Ibadan Main Gate at 7:00 A.M, where they were addressed by the organisers.
The program was held in order to commemorate World Clean Up Day, drive up awareness among students about environmental conservation, and to clean up the school environment.
The Registrar, the Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Dean of Science, the Students’ Union President and the co-founder of the Recycledge, Mr Victor Oyejide, were all in attendance at the start of the program, and gave words of encouragement to the students who participated.
The students were then organised into ten groups of fifteen people each and dispatched to different parts of the university to pick up plastic bottles, nylons and cans.
The rain did little to dampen the spirits of the volunteers as they set forth. Later, they converged at the Students’ Union Car Park, where the trash picked up was weighed and volunteers were given some refreshments before they disbanded.
Adedayo, a 300-level student of Nursing said, “though it was interesting, the weather made it more tedious.”
Also Mueez, a 500-level student of Economics, when asked about the programme said the program was impactful.
