Professor Adejoke Akinyele, Dean of the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources, University of Ibadan, has called for the elimination of middlemen in the food and agriculture supply value chain to ensure food security in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 40th year reunion of the UI Agriculture and Forestry Class of 84 held on the 5th of September, 2024, Professor Akinyele emphasized the need for direct interaction between farmers and consumers to reduce food prices and increase availability.

The three-day reunion event brought together alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields, including academia, industry, and government. Activities included a thanksgiving service, campus walk, tour of university facilities, courtesy visit to the university leadership, and a banquet.

In his remarks, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Peter Olapegba praised the achievements of the alumni, describing them as “owners” of the university. He urged them to take an active role in supporting the institution’s mission to maintain excellence.

The reunion also featured an anniversary lecture, donation of equipment and furniture to the university, and a press conference where the leadership of the class of 84 engaged with media houses on strategies to revamp education and ensure food security.

The event concluded with a banquet where the set of 84 honored their former lecturers and recognized outstanding achievers, including Professor Abayomi Fasina, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti. Two best graduating students from the succeeding faculties were also awarded plaques and cash prizes.
