The National Association of University Students (NAUS), Oyo State Chapter, has on Wednesday, 18th of September, 2024, in a circular signed by the Executive Chairman, Comrade Michael Oladipupo and the Secretary General, Olagunju Oluwasegun, demanded for the downward review of school fees and for the extension of the deadline for the payment of school fees given to the students of the University of Ibadan by the management of the school.
According to the released circular which expressed “profound concern and displeasure to the management of the University of Ibadan regarding the hike in tuition fees”, it was stated that the body demands “not only an immediate extension of the payment deadline but also a downward review of the tuition fees payable by all students.”
Noting the fundamentality of the right to education, it further stated that the “recent hike in tuition fees imposed by the management of the University of Ibadan has placed an intolerable financial strain on students and their families, many of whom are already grappling with severe economic challenges.
This abrupt increase not only exacerbates existing hardships but also threatens to deprive many students of their right to education.”
The body has, in addition to condemning the hike and demanding for a review, urged the management to “seek alternative revenue streams that do not place an additional burden on students.”
The circular furthermore read that the body requests for an “additional 4-6 weeks” extension for students to complete their payments” and that the body will consider all available options to ensure the student body is heard and supported.”
