After IndyPress Story, SUEC Makes First Public Address

Hours after IndyPress social justice story about the prolonged delay in convening 2023/2024 UI’SU election, a Students’ Union Electoral Commission has surfaced.

A release by the Electoral Commission hinted that the ban on electoral activities will be lifted in two days.

“Esteemed Students of the University of Ibadan, this is to officially notify the entire university community that the ban on electoral activities will be lifted in two days. This announcement marks the beginning of the much-anticipated electoral process for the upcoming elections. All candidates, campaign teams, and stakeholders are advised to prepare for the commencement of activities while adhering strictly to the electoral guidelines,” the Electoral Commission said.

On the electoral timetable, details of the important dates and activities for the election were released.

The release noted that the anticipated election will be unbanned on Saturday, 18th January 2024.

Collection and submission of nomination forms would last between Monday, 20th January 2025 and Friday, 31st January.

Screening exercise for candidates was fixed for February 15, 2025.

Press night was scheduled to be held on Wednesday, 19 February, 2025.

Stating the guidelines of the election, as stated in the release by the Publicity Committee, signed by Olarewaju Ibrahim, all electoral campaigns and related activities must comply strictly with the electoral guidelines as provided by the Electoral Commission.

“Candidates and campaign teams are to ensure decorum and respect university rules during all engagement. Activities should foster unity and respect, reflecting the core values of our university. We urge everyone to embrace this electoral season with a sense of responsibility and integrity to uphold the democratic principles of our institution,” the release read.
