Days to UI SU Week, Late Budget Submission Delays Approval

The delayed submission and consideration of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Week budget have raised concerns over the planning and accountability of the union’s financial process, an IndyPress review has found.

The recurring delay in presenting the budget for scrutiny in previous administrations has left the Students’ Representative Council with limited time to properly deliberate on the proposed expenditure before the commencement of Union Week.

Recall that during Covenant Odedele-led administration the Union’s week budget was approved during the course of the union week’s events as a result of late submission of reports.

A similar delay has emerged under the Deboye-led SU administration.

Information gathered by IndyPress revealed that the proposed 36m plus budget is yet to be fully deliberated upon by the financial committee.

According to a report presented by the UI SRC Financial Committee Chairman during the third emergency sitting on September 5, 2026, the initial draft of the Union Week budget was received from the executive council on August 30, 2026, less than two weeks before the commencement of the program.

The committee said the initial submission was rejected and returned to the executive for revision following a preliminary review that identified several non-compliance issues.

“An official communication detailing these required corrections was transmitted to the executive body on August 31, 2026. However, a revised submission was not received until September 3, 2026,” the committee stated.

The delay in resubmitting the revised budget raises questions about the timeliness of budget preparation, accountability and the extent to which the Students’ Union’s financial processes allow adequate time for legislative scrutiny before major programs commence.

As of the moment of this filling, the proposed budget as presented by the Union Vice president, Glory Salawu is yet to be properly deliberated with the union week scheduled to commence on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
