The members of the Students’ Union Executive Council and the Students’ Representative Council held an official meeting with the Dean of Students, Professor Fakeye Abiona, on Friday, March 21, 2025.
The meeting, according to a memo jointly signed by the principal officers of the Students’ Representative Council, addressed the electoral matter of Hon. Nice Linus, a 300-level Law student.
Recall that on March 4, 2025, Nice Linus was unilaterally suspended from the Students’ Representative Council due to a pending disciplinary case – “an ineligibility for occupying student leadership positions”, as stated by the University Deputy Registrar (Students), Mr. T. I. Musa in an internal memorandum.
According to the Students’ Union leadership, it was clarified at the meeting that students with pending cases are not allowed to hold student-occupied positions. The Students’ Union did not confirm seeing a copy of the University regulation which highlighted that.
It was also stated that following “the overriding of the Students’ Union constitution as revised in 1998/1999, certain sections of the constitution are no longer in effect.”
“It was confirmed that students with pending cases before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee are ineligible to contest for student-occupied offices. Similarly, staff members of the university with pending cases are not eligible for promotion,” the memo reads.
“Notably, some sections of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union constitution (revised in 1998/1999) are no longer in force, overridden by new Senate regulations. Following the Students’ Union proscription in 2017, the Senate Committee saddled with the responsibility of reinstating the Union ‘recommended’ changes, including minimum CGPA requirements for office and addressing pending SDC cases, which our constitution (1998/1999) as a union did not cater for.”
It was confirmed in the memo that the Constitution Review Committee would commence a comprehensive review of the Students’ Union constitution in alignment with the current Senate regulations and the revised Students’ Handbook.
The essence of the constitutional review, as explained by the Students’ Representative Council, is to prevent future controversies.
Regarding the unprovoked harassment of Nice Linus, students and two campus journalists, Olanshile Ogunrinu and Akanni Micheal, on the Students’ Union Executive Council inauguration day, the SRC stated in the memo that in its meeting with the Chief Security Officer, he simply pledged to remain committed to student security, as well as handling “such issues with utmost care in the future.”
