The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, has declared a state of emergency over the deteriorating condition of students’ hostels across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
He made the declaration while delivering his inaugural address at the 2026 National Inauguration Ceremony of the National Association of Nigerian Students, held at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
Speaking, Akinteye expressed concern over the condition of student accommodation across the country, describing many public hostels as unfit for habitation.
“The state of students’ hostels across our tertiary institutions is pathetically disheartening. Many hostels are in a deplorable and dilapidated condition, and they continue to deteriorate with little or no attention from the relevant authorities,” he said.
He added that many students are forced to live in poor sanitary conditions with inadequate facilities and are sometimes exposed to environmental hazards.
“They are unbecoming of institutions of learning and unconducive to decent living, with many students forced to endure poor sanitation, inadequate facilities, and even exposure to wild animals and other environmental hazards. This is unacceptable.”
“Consequently, I hereby declare a State of Emergency on students’ hostels across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.”
The NANS president further assures students that the association would prioritise the welfare, safety, and dignity of Nigerian students.
“The welfare, safety, and dignity of Nigerian students can no longer be compromised,” he added.
Recall that despite multiple concerns raised by students and concerned bodies over time, deteriorating hostel facilities have persisted in several Nigerian universities, including the University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University.
