The management of the Great Independence Hall, University of Ibadan, has strongly reiterated that cooking inside student rooms is strictly prohibited, warning that violators risk severe disciplinary actions.
This was disclosed by the Hall Warden during a town hall meeting with residents, following a close-call fire incident in the hall last week.
According to the Warden, the restriction has become necessary to safeguard lives and property following dangerous practices by some students.
”The management of University of Ibadan is working towards the use of gas. And when you look around, you will see that we have put some measures in place, fire extinguisher, fire alarm. Officially, the university will communicate with you. But now, it is forbidden for you to cook in your room. Somebody nearly burnt our hall last week, ” the Warden stated.
The management noted that while efforts are underway to transition toward safer cooking alternatives like gas systems in line with university guidelines, students still resort to hazardous methods.
”That is it. We are warning you not to cook in the room. You cook in the room with kerosene, stoves and before you know it. While we are working on your kitchenette. Please, if you cannot go to the kitchenette to cook, you are permitted to cook in front of your room. We are not permitted to use hot plates,” the Warden added.
He also noted that firm alarm has been installed in the kitchette
