After Multiple Cutdowns of Trees, ‘Team Diligent’ Engages UI Students’ Affairs

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) has expressed concerns over the recent felling of trees within the university community.

This follows observations that trees were cut down on Saturday, October 24, 2026, around the Queen Elizabeth II Hall of Residence.

In a memo dated October 25, 2026, and signed by President Temidayo S. Adeboye and General Secretary Joshua O. Shontan, the Union stated that while it understands tree removal may sometimes be necessary for infrastructural, safety, or operational reasons.

“Trees are essential to a healthy campus environment. They provide shade, help regulate surrounding temperatures, support biodiversity, improve air quality, and contribute significantly to the comfort and well-being of students and staff.”

The Union noted that with the current intense heat being experienced on campus, trees are vital for shade, temperature regulation, air quality, and the overall well-being of staff and students.

According to the memo, the Union has engaged the Student Affairs Division and the Dean of Students to seek clarification on the ongoing activity and has called for a pause on avoidable tree felling pending further engagement.

The union also stressed that the preservation of the university’s green spaces should remain a key consideration in any decision affecting the campus environment.
