UI Students’ Union Celebrates Week with Lecture, Panel Discussion on Success

The Students’ Union, University of Ibadan on Wednesday, 11th December 2024, held a personality lecture as part of the activities to commemorate its 2023/2024 week.

The program which started off with the rendition of the national anthem and the University anthem, was followed by an opening address delivered by the Vice President of the Students’ union, Boluwatife Aboderin, who thanked all the dignitaries in attendance, while soliciting support for the union’s “Light Up” project.

The guest lecturer, Dr. Tolulope Aderemi who spoke on the theme “Building the You Brand” encouraged students of the university to prepare for the job market.

Dr. Tolulope stressed that most conventional approaches in life are becoming increasingly ineffective, while urging students to be creative. He noted that reputation and network are key factors to succeed in today’s world.

The personality lecturer of the day, Professor Ayodeji Omole, currently the pro-chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomosho, who doubles as former UI ASUU Chairman spoke on the lecture, titled “Beyond borders: The Champ and his Pains”.

Representing the personality lecturer, Professor Temisan Akinjuwa, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, bemoaned factors affecting the state of the student community in Nigeria. He decried the poor state of educational infrastructure, bad governance and bad economic conditions amongst others as stumbling blocks to the progress of students.

Professor Akinjuwa urged students to not allow hindrances keep them behind. He advised students of the university to focus on capacity building, while having a mindset that would make them stand among their peers.

“We cannot give up, running away is not an option. We will continue to engage the society,” Professor Akinjuwa said.

A panel discussion anchored by Olabisi Oladayo discussed the topic “Signpost to Success: University of Ibadan to the World” had Mr. Ahmad Bashorun, Mr Raphael Stephen, Mrs. Yemisi Adepoju and Dr. Isaac Omofadewa as panelists.

After the panel session, awards were presented to the panelists in recognition of their participation in the program.
