'Computing Must Solve Societal Problems,' UI DVC Tells Researchers

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), University of Ibadan, Professor Juwon Arotiba, has urged computing researchers to develop technologies that address societal challenges, stressing that the discipline should focus on solving real-world problems rather than merely advancing technology.

He made the assertion while representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, at the maiden international conference of the Faculty of Computing, themed “Frontiers in Computing for Sustainable Development.

“Computing has moved beyond asking what technology can do to examining what it should do, whom it should serve, and at what cost to society and the environment.” Professor Arotiba said.

He added that “Artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and other emerging technologies must be deployed responsibly to solve societal problems, research should focus on developing solutions that address local and national needs rather than merely adopting foreign models.”

‎Professor Arotiba also urged researchers to develop indigenous datasets and technologies that reflect African realities while pursuing intellectual rigour, strengthen their mathematical and engineering foundations, and ensure that their innovations remain relevant to humanity.

He also affirmed the importance of an upgrade in software engineering education while restating the University’s commitment to creating and advancing knowledge in service to humanity.

“Software engineering education must evolve to prepare graduates for an AI-driven future,”he added.

Other dignitaries present included Professor Adenike Osofisan, the first female Professor of Computer Science in Africa and one of the progenitors of the erstwhile Department of Computer Science, the provost of the post graduate college, professor A. S.O Ogunjiyigbe, director of the distance learning center professor O.F.W Onifade and professor Benjamin Aribisala, a professor of computer science at Lagos state university who was a special guest of honor at the ceremony.
