The Students History Society of Nigeria Independent Electoral Commission (SHSNIEC) has offered a detailed explanation of the decisions and events surrounding the recent election, in which only one of the eight executive candidates in the department secured victory.
Recall that IndyPress reported that only Joy Iyanoluwa Olusoga, who contested for the office of General Secretary and polled 29 votes, was elected in the election.
Other unopposed aspirants, including the presidential candidate, failed to meet the constitutional requirements for election.
According to the Commission, 91 voters were accredited for the election, but only 56 votes were cast, while 35 accredited voters did not vote.
In a statement on Tuesday, the electoral body provided an account of its stewardship and recommended convening a student congress to resolve the current imbroglio in the student association.
“If there is any lesson to be drawn from the 2025/2026 SHSN election, it is that the affairs of the Society cannot be governed by convenience. Where a constitutional provision is unclear, members should seek clarification through the appropriate institutional channels. Where a provision is considered defective, members should pursue an amendment. The Commission’s announced results were issued on the basis of its interpretation of the Constitution and the rule it was required to apply,” the statement read.
“Section 8(1)(d) of the Constitution provides that at least 20 members drawn across all levels may call for Congress on a pressing issue, provided their names are signed on a sheet calling for such Congress, and that the request is copied to the Staff Adviser, the executives and the HPO. This gives members a constitutional route to bring pressing concerns before Congress,” it noted.
