Following IndyPress report on the uncertainty surrounding the approval of the Cooking Gas Policy on Wednesday, July 22, the University of Ibadan Student Union has provided an update regarding the approval process for gas usage in the various halls of residence.
This was disclosed in a statement co-signed by the Students’ Union President, Deboye Temidayo, and the General Secretary, Joshua O. Shontan, on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
“We understand that many students have been looking forward to the approval of gas usage in our halls of residence. We also understand the inconveniences the delay has caused, and we appreciate the patience and understanding shown by members of our student community,” the statement reads.
According to the Union, the approval process is tied to safety measures that must be implemented before the University grants final approval. It noted that one of the major requirements has been implemented.
“The installation of fire extinguishers across the halls of residence has commenced. This is an important safety measure and one of the key steps required before the final approval for the use of gas can be granted.”
The Union further stressed that it remains actively engaged with the relevant authorities and will continue to follow up until the approval process is concluded.
“Our priority has always been to ensure that students can make use of gas in a manner that is both safe and officially approved,” it added.
Appealing for patience, the Union said, “We therefore appeal for just a little more patience as the ongoing installations are completed. We are optimistic that this brings us much closer to the final approval, and we will immediately communicate further updates as soon as the process is concluded.”
