The University of Ibadan has commenced the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor following the announcement that the position will become vacant on November 1, 2026, at the expiration of the tenure of Professor Kayode Adebowale.
The development was disclosed in an Internal/External Advertisement for the appointment of Vice-Chancellor issued by the university’s Registrar, Ganiyu Saliu, on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
“The post of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria will become vacant on 01 November, 2026,” the notice reads.
Recall that the Vice-Chancellor selection process previously experienced delays after the position became vacant on December 1, 2020, following tensions that led to the dissolution of the university’s Governing Council.
A new council chaired by John Odigie-Oyegun was inaugurated in April 2021 to restart the process, which eventually produced Professor Adebowale as 13th Vice-Chancellor on October 14, 2021 for a five-year non-renewable tenure.
The criteria for the ongoing application process include that candidates for the post of VC must not be more than 65 years old as of the date of possible assumption of duty on November 1, 2026; be highly distinguished scholars of the rank of professor with a minimum of 10 years’ experience at that level; and demonstrate the ability to provide academic and administrative leadership.
Other criteria include that the candidate must be a person of proven integrity; command the respect of the national and international academic communities through his/her track record; strengthen the bridges between staff, students and other members of the university community.
“The candidate must be a person with a clear vision for the development of the university, enjoy excellent physical and mental health, and attract the much-needed funds into the university,” It added.
